Haunting, heady, and evocative, Angel Heart is a music storybook with original music by award-winning composer Luna Pearl Woolf and original text by bestselling children’s fantasy writer Cornelia Funke. Synthesizing the work of pioneering A-list artists from multiple disciplines, Angel Heart represents an innovative, music-centered approach to children’s storytelling. Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons narrates, with musical performances from cellist Matt Haimovitz, his all-cello ensemble Uccello, and vocalists Frederica von Stade, Lisa Delan, Zheng Cao, Daniel Taylor, and Sanford Sylvan. Enhanced by visual storytelling and design by the award-winning creative studio Mirada, Angel Heart’s deluxe CD package is due for release by Oxingale Records on September 24, with an interactive iPad app created by Mirada soon to follow. The musicians will reunite for two live multimedia performances of Angel Heart at family concerts at Cal Performances at UC Berkeley (Oct 6) and at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York (Oct 21).

The Angel Heart story

A girl whose heart has broken into a thousand pieces meets a guardian angel. During their travels in the night, the angel enlists the help of spirits of the East, North, West, and South on his quest to mend her heart.

Collaborators

  • Luna Pearl Woolf’s music has been called “blazingly ardent and softly haunting” (New York Times). Her collaborations with authors, filmmakers, dancers and musicians tell original stories or grapple with history and current events. Co-founded Oxingale Productions with her husband, cellist Matt Haimovitz. Recent recordings include a full album of her works on Oxingale Records, and several song cycles on PentaTone Classics.
  • American soprano Lisa Delan is recognized for her versatility and vast repertoire. Opera online praised her voice for its “luminescence … with a creamy, soothing tone that can be spellbinding.” Sequenza 21 wrote that “as a song interpreter, she may well be unequaled.”
  • Cornelia Funke is one of world’s most successful children’s and young adult authors. Her books have been translated into 37 languages, published in 43 countries, and have worldwide sales of more than 20 million copies. Most popular works: Dragon Rider, The Thief Lord, the Inkheart trilogy and MirrorWorld, a fantasy series for all ages, which includes Reckless, Fearless and a MirrorWorld interactive app produced in partnership with Mirada. The German author writes her stories longhand in her writing house in Beverly Hills, CA.
  • Mirada is a multi-platform storytelling company formed in 2010 by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth), cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, and Motion Theory co-founders Mathew Cullen & Javier Jimenez. “Purveyors of handmade stories”: equal parts design studio, visual effects & animation facility, creative & technology incubator, development & production company.
